This book explains the fundamental concepts of C++ for Symbian OS. It is targeted at readers who wish to hone their understanding of Symbian OS v9 software development, and it will prepare them to become Accredited Symbian Developers.
The Accredited Symbian Developer Primer explains the fundamental concepts of Symbian C++ development and is the official revision guide to the Accredited Symbian Developer (ASD) exam. The knowledge and skills detailed in the book will teach you how to create high quality code for Symbian C++ applications and services; and prepare you for the ASD exam.
The book is written by Jo Stichbury, author of Symbian OS Explained, and Mark Jacobs of Meme Education (Meme Education were heavily involved in the creation of questions for the ASD exam). Mark and Jo identified a set of learning objectives from the ASD exam which they use as the basis for the book’s format. Each chapter groups together learning objectives by subject and breaks them into sections that provide in-depth explanations of Symbian C++ and Symbian OS. In precise and concise format, the book conveys the knowledge that is needed to pass the ASD exam. You may test your understanding of the book’s material using sample questions available on the Meme Education website.
The Accredited Symbian Developer (ASD) scheme contributes to the long term success of the Symbian ecosystem. It provides a means to benchmark developers, assess training needs, and, ultimately, enhance the quality of Symbian software. The ASD exam provides a quantified analysis of an individual developer’s technical strengths and weaknesses, thus facilitating the rapid, astute and cost-effective recruitment of Symbian C++ developers. This same tool can be used to identify areas of expertise and skills gaps within groups of developers, allowing the appropriate allocation of development teams to projects.
The ASD exam is rigorous and fair, presenting each candidate with a sub-set of questions from a large repository. No candidate will sit the exact same test in terms of the questions asked, but all will be assessed against the same curriculum. The ASD exam is endorsed by both UIQ and S60. The Elisabet Melin of UIQ describes ASD as enabling the “independent verification of developer skills to be demonstrated to potential employers and colleagues” and Lee Epting of S60 describes ASD as providing “a rigorous, industry-standard assessment of individuals' knowledge of Symbian OS C++”.
